NMDP’s research through CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research®) and patient outcomes data you report to CIBMTR are helping answer important clinical questions and build the evidence your team needs to make informed decisions for your patients. CIBMTR is a research collaboration between the Medical College of Wisconsin® and NMDP.

The NMDP Donor for All initiative is building evidence for the safe and effective use of mismatched unrelated donors (MMUDs)—helping transplant teams consider more donor options for more patients.
Knowing when to pivot to an alternative donor
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that when transplant teams use a donor search prognosis strategy, there’s no difference in HCT outcomes for patients unlikely to find a MUD.
Broadening the donor pool safely with multiple mismatches
New ACCESS clinical trial data published in Blood Advances show one-year patient outcomes are similar to fully matched donors when using young, <7/8 MMUDs and PTCy.

How one center changed course with specialized guidance
Challenge
After multiple matched donors fell through for different reasons, UC San Diego (UCSD) Health turned to its NMDP CHS partner for a new path forward.
How NMDP helped
The CHS partner provided proactive donor outreach, a tailored search strategy and data and research to support consideration of an MMUD.
Outcome
The transplant team moved forward with confidence, using research-backed recommendations to identify an MMUD. Today, MMUDs are a regular part of UCSD's donor search strategy.
Our CHS partner pulled data, articles and other information, which made it so much more comfortable for our physicians to ultimately decide to select an MMUD. That evidence-based support changed our practice.

CASE STUDY 2: NICKLAUS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
Extending expertise without expanding staff
Challenge
A pediatric transplant center with a lean clinical team needed additional expertise and support to navigate complex patient cases.
How NMDP helped
Their dedicated NMDP partners began a weekly case review meeting with the Nicklaus team to provide support, consultation and research-backed guidance. An NMDP physician joins when needed.

Through weekly collaboration and expert clinical consultation, the center has the support it needs to move complex cases forward with greater confidence and avoid delays in the patient’s journey to transplant.
