About Our Research

Advancing cell therapy through research

Research is critically important in making cell therapy accessible to more patients and improving outcomes. We can improve access, survival, treatment, and quality of life for patients by working with the global cell therapy community.

In partnership with centers around the world, we lead transformative research and outcomes analysis through the CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research®)—our research collaboration with the Medical College of Wisconsin—to help you make data-driven clinical decisions.

Together, we will continue to advance the field and improve outcomes.

Together we will

Like the cell therapy industry, our partnership with you is rapidly evolving. Together we discover. Together we innovate. Together we will advance the future of care.

Bioinformatics research

The dedicated members on our Bioinformatics Research team combine scientific expertise with computational analysis and development capabilities. We generate models, research new methods, and build pilot software tools to facilitate data exchange and translation, interpret and process complex and high-volume data, calculate probabilities and discover new factors to save and improve lives. We apply expertise and state-of-the-art tools including omics analysis, registry and predictive modeling, and machine learning applications to uncover actionable ways to put research into practice.

Immunobiology research

We facilitate and conduct studies to define the clinical role and behavior of the immune system using hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and cellular therapies as the model system. Our Immunobiology Research program partners with the CIBMTR (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research) Immunobiology Working Group Committee (IBWC), clinical trials and numerous collaborators on studies that use samples from the CIBMTR biorepository collected by NMDP from related and unrelated transplant donors, cord blood units and recipients. We analyze data, serve as expert consultants, and manage research projects to prepare data resources and perform studies that optimize patient-therapy matching algorithms and uncover immunobiological determinants for the application of cellular therapies to save and improve patient lives.

Improving patient outcomes by collecting and analyzing data

Through the collaboration and dedication of our transplant center partners, we collect outcomes data on:
  • Every allogeneic transplant performed in the U.S.
  • U.S. autologous transplants with data voluntarily submitted by transplant centers
  • International allogeneic and autologous transplants with data voluntarily submitted by transplant centers
  • Other cellular therapies, including commercial cell therapy products for hematologic indications

The CIBMTR’s clinical data base, which contains information from more than 675,000 patients, can be used for patient care decisions, developing research studies, education and CIBMTR research studies. The database is a critical tool to improving patient outcomes.

Conducting clinical trials to further the cellular therapy field

Our CIBMTR team collaboratively addresses the most pressing clinical questions in cellular therapy by supporting and leading a variety of clinical trial activities.

More than 100 of our transplant partners participate in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN). Through the BMT CTN, we conduct large, multi-institutional Phase II and Phase III clinical trials that are available to patients in all regions of the U.S.

CIBMTR Clinical Research Organization Services (CRO Services) formerly known as the Resource for Clinical Investigation in Blood and Marrow Transplantation (RCI BMT), specializes in the design and oversight of bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy clinical trials. CRO Services focus on collaboration with organizations on the highest impact clinical trials.
